On June 7th, 1994, at 28 years of age, José Jaime Pierluisi was a victim of the same violence he so vehemently tried to eradicate in his beloved Puerto Rico. Friends and family, from Harvard University and home, as well as his fellow coworkers, decided to continue his legacy, and as a tribute, the José Jaime Pierluisi Foundation was created. Guided by their desire to transform a senseless tragedy into positive and noble actions, a group of 21 people committed themselves to the continuity of his work, giving hope to hundreds of students through academic programs sponsored by the Foundation.
Children and youth were always a priority in José Jaime’s busy schedule. He often visited public schools to bring a message of optimism and desire to overcome difficulties, and motivated them to study by telling them that education is the first step towards a better future.
The José Jaime Pierluisi Foundation established various Scholarship Programs, whose main objective is to provide financial aid to students in bachelor and master’s degree programs.
These scholarships are awarded to students who have outstanding academic records, high moral qualities, great leadership potential, and who are interested to give back to society. These students should exemplify José Jaime’s qualities of spirituality, ethics, generosity, a genuine desire to contribute to the betterment of Puerto Rico, and an unwavering commitment with honesty and loyalty.
